Fiji rally around Tuisova after loss of son

By Fiona Tomas

Fiji captain Waisea Nayacalevu has praised his team-mate Josua Tuisova for playing through heartache at the World Cup after the star centre missed his son’s funeral to stay at the tournament.

Tuisova learned about his seven-year-old son’s passing hours before featuring in Fiji’s game with Georgia. He started in the Pacific Islanders’ one-point loss to Portugal on Sunday, which was enough to guarantee a quarter-final meeting with England in Marseille this weekend.

Tuisova, whose son died following a long illness, embraced his spiritual side as he took the pitch in Toulouse, inscribing several words on his wrist strapping relating to his family and including a Bible verse denoting strength and courage.
