PGA Championship 2023 LIVE: Latest updates as Brooks Koepka wins fifth major

Brooks Koepka held off the challenge of Viktor Hovland and the surging Scottie Scheffler to win his third US PGA Championship title and fifth major.

Koepka, who felt he had “choked” when holding the 54-hole lead at the Masters last month, kept his cool to shoot a final-round 66 at Oak Hill Country Club.

Hovland kept the pressure on and reduced Koepka’s lead to one with five holes to play – but the Norwegian’s chances evaporated with a double bogey at the 16th.

Scheffler’s fine 65 saw the American get to within two of Koepka, who held on to win his first major since his last PGA Championship in 2019.

The highlight of the day came from club professional Michael Block, the 46-year-old making a hole-in-one on the 15th as he played the final round alongside Rory McIlroy, who finished in a tie for seventh place.

BROOKS KOEPKA WINS THE US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP

Koepka -9 (67), Hovland -7 (68)

Hovland makes his birdie to ensure he finishes in a tie for second. That’s well-deserved for the Norwegian who challenged Koepka all the way.

Koepka can’t make his birdie effort but he taps in for par to secure his two-shot victory!

DeChambeau and Conners finish off

DeChambeau -3 (70), Conners E (75)

We haven’t seen much of these two in the past hour but Bryson knocks in for a par and finishes at three under for the tournament and tied for fourth.

Conners finishes with a bogey and it’s a disappointing final-round 75 for the 36-hole leader.

Koepka straight up the middle

Koepka -9 (17), Hovland -6 (17)

Brooks safely negotiates the tee shot before stripping one in close. Finishing in emphatic fashion. Hovland is on the putting surface in two as well.

Koepka makes bogey, takes two-shot lead to the last

Koepka -9 (17), Hovland -6 (17)

Hovland gets up and down from greenside for his par while Koepka two-putts for his bogey.

He has a two-shot lead going up the last – should be no problem, right? Just don’t think about Mito Pereira, Brooksey.

Birdie at the last for Scheffler

The world number two knocks in a decent effort from mid-range to move himself up to seven under – perhaps a bit of pressure on Koepka?

A final round of 65 should ultimately count for little but it’s a reminder of just how good he is. He will no doubt look back on his poor performance with the putter yesterday as the killer blow this week.

Trouble off the tee

Koepka -10 (16), Hovland -6 (16)

Koepka fires way right off the tee and has to chip out onto the fairway. It’s a well-judged wedge into the green and he’ll have a putt for par. Hovland’s drive trickles into the rough and his second comes up short and right of the green.

Scheffler up the last

Scheffler’s birdie attempt on the 17th races by and he remains at six under with one to play.

Double bogey for Hovland, Koepka leads by four

Koepka -10 (16), Hovland -6 (16)

Hovland can’t make the 20-foot putt for a bogey and it’s a double-bogey six for the Norwegian. Koepka applies the finishing touches to his perfect iron shot and converts for his birdie.

The four-time major champion now leads by four with two to play. Soon to be a five-time major champion, surely?

Koepka applies pressure

Hovland takes a drop and elects to just chip it back into the fairway. He fires into the green but he has plenty of work to just make bogey.

Koepka steps up from the fairway and hits a beautiful iron in close. He’ll have a very makeable birdie.

That could well be that…

Marvellous from Block

McIlroy -2 (69), Block +1 (71)

It’s rare that McIlroy is overshadowed in a pairing but it’s happening now courtesy of Michael Block. The club pro flies it way into the crowd on the last hole but produces a miraculous scramble to make a par and finish his round one over par and in a tie for 15th. That feat will earn him an invite back to next year’s tournament.

McIlroy taps in for his par – a ‘what could have been’ round in another ‘what could have been’ tournament for Rory.
