OAKLAND — Police here have identified a 20-year-old man who was killed in late August during a shooting that also wounded an 18-year-old man.
Demani William, 20, of San Francisco, was shot and killed Aug. 30. No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting, and police are investigating the possibility it was gang-related, authorities say.
William and an 18-year-old man were found suffering from gunshot wounds on the 1400 block of 8th Avenue, a little after midnight on Aug. 30. Police soon determined that the shooting took place in a different part of Oakland, at the 600 block of East 18th Street, authorities said.
The 18-year-old was hospitalized but survived. During a search of the vehicle he and William were in, officers found a loaded pistol with an extended magazine, police said.
Police haven’t said if they’ve pinpointed a specific motive, nor have they released any information about potential suspects.
In the days after William’s death, his Instagram page was flooded with condolences, but also several comments from one account mocking his violent death, including one that suggests firsthand knowledge of where he was shot. Police say dozens of shots were fired.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $15,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the shooter. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
