Hunter shoots partner after mistaking him for turkey, Washington County sheriff says

A 48-year-old Excelsior man injured his hunting partner on Wednesday afternoon south of Stillwater after mistaking him for a turkey and firing a shot, officials said.

The men were hunting together east of Northbrook Boulevard and 51st Street about 1:30 p.m. when the shooting occurred, according to a news release issued by the Washington County sheriff’s office.

Washington County sheriff’s deputies and paramedics responded to the scene and took the wounded man — a 54-year-old from Arden Hills — to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The man who fired the shot is cooperating with investigators and the shooting appears to have been an accident.

The sheriff’s office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources are investigating.
